The Brio Farm Railway Set is the perfect wooden train set to encourage sharing and teamwork. If you have been following this blog for a while, you will know that we are huge fans of Brio in our house and have collected a fair few of the wooden train sets over the years, but this is our favourite by far. Brio sets are great for imaginary play and encouraging story telling, but the Brio Farm Railway Set is also a great toy for encouraging the understanding of basic science and engineering as well.
The Brio Farm Railway Set comes with; a storage barn (with magnet), one tractor, one connectable brown cow trailer, one cow, one train, one connectable truck, two fence pieces, one magnetic hay bail, one road crossing and one connectable piece of track (that connects to the storage barn).
The barn’s built in magnet runs on a multiple action mechanism, which allows children to lift the hay bail up and down, but also allows children to move in backwards and forwards in and out of the barn. This is such a clever mechanism, which the boys took no time getting to grips with.
The boys worked really well together moving the hay bail in and out of the barn and moving the cow around and ‘putting it to bed’ in the barn’s lower level. I actually bought Monkey a cow trailer with a cow as a stocking filler present at Christmas, so he loved connecting them together and adding to the farm set. It was really interesting watching him as he thought about what could enhance his play and finding the right toys to do just that.
Having such a variety of different aspects to the set makes it a great toy to encourage sharing. The boys took it in turns to play with the magnet on the barn and drive the cows around the track, swapping occasionally to give one another time with different parts of the set. It is so lovely finding toys that help children develop sharing skills, especially as sharing is a good base for empathy and caring for others.
Some Brio toys (such as the train shed) are designed to enhance play opposed to being a stand alone set, but we found that the Brio Farm Railway Set works incredibly well as a stand alone set because of the amount of variety built into it. That said it would also integrate very well when used in larger play scenes.
What we think of the Brio Farm Railway Set
The Brio Farm Railway Set has been my favourite so far and would make a great first set, especially for little ones who love the farm. The boys have absolutely loved creating their own stories and it has been a great way of communicating the responsibility of looking after animals. Although it is a strongly themed set, there is a lot of room to create various different stories and scenarios. It has made a great addition to our existing Brio collection and like many Brio products is incredibly well made, meaning it will be something we can keep for generations to come.
The Brio Farm Railway Set retails at £34.99 and is for ages 3+.
