As a travelling family, we love reaching a new destination and exploring all there is to offer. We love meandering around the bustling street markets, trying the local delicacies and visiting iconic destinations. When travelling with young children in tow, it isn’t just about those ‘traveller moments’ though. When travelling with children, there needs to an element of familiarity and at points a complete rest for a few days. We are always taking cues from the boys and when they start getting grumpy or start misbehaving, we take it as a sign we need to stop for a while, regroup and spend our time not doing all that much. Having just arrived in Siem Reap via a bumpy bus ride from Phnom Penh, we began to realise this was just the case and knew it was time to find somewhere that was a home away from home, where we could kick back a bit. That is when The Amazing Residence got in touch and we felt it was perfecting timing for a collaboration.
The Amazing Residence is in a relatively central location in Siem Reap, with a local night market, tourism venders and the famed tourist ‘Pub Street’ a few minutes away. Pub Street is exactly what it sounds like, a street lined with westernised restaurants and pub style dining. It is a quite a bit more expensive than the Cambodian style restaurants, but it is really easy to get your hands on a good hamburger and fries. With tourism venders mere minutes away, it doesn’t take long to find and negotiate a price on excursions such as a tour of Angkor Wat and onward travel, whether that be the beaches in the south or a trip to another neighbouring country.
The Amazing Residence is an incredibly family friendly hotel, with welcoming staff that provide cold drinks on arrival, which is just perfect after carrying heavy packs and equally heavy children through the streets of Siem Reap. Once checked in, we were shown to our family room on the first floor and given the details for if we needed anything from the staff.
The family rooms at The Amazing Residence are perfect for families, with vast amounts of space, a sofa area, a large bathtub, good shower, fluffy beds and a balcony. Complimentary teas, coffees and a varied buffet styled breakfast is also included in the price of the room. It really is a home away from home, which is just great for families wanting a bit of time to relax.
When travelling for long periods of time, I find myself falling into a pattern of waking up and enjoying a cup of tea before the children wake up. It was such a lovely treat to open the balcony doors, listen to the city slowly stirring and coming to life, while enjoying a cup of tea. Siem Reap was the first stop in a long while that we managed to track down some English Tea, which made it even more of a perfect start to the day.
The layout and size of of the room also meant that both myself and Mr. C could enjoy a couple of drinks on the balcony once the children were in bed and were still be able to see them at all times. It was such a novelty for us and we used it as the perfect opportunity to enjoy a date night. Although room service is available, we found it easier to order at drinks down at the bar and then have them brought up to our room. The bar staff were so courteous, polite and make an amazing cocktail. I think we underestimate the importance of spending time together as a couple while on our travels and will definitely allow more time in the evenings just the two of us.
To help keep our diet as balanced at possible we opt for buttered bread and a fruit salad at lunch. We visited one of the local markets to stock up on fruit, kept them in the fridge to keep them fresh and then served our own lunch on the balcony. It’s a great way of keeping costs down, but more importantly it also makes for a very relaxing mealtime.
As well as beautiful rooms, The Amazing Residence also has a great restaurant, bar and swimming pool in the complex. The pool is moderately sized, but we found that in the morning we were the only people by the pool side. Since visiting the water park in Phnom Penh, the boys have been asking to go swimming most days, so we loved having the pool to ourselves in the morning so we could keep teaching the boys how to swim. It has been amazing watching the boys confidence grow in the water, especially Bear, who up until recently hadn’t shown any interest in learning to swim.
We loved our stay at The Amazing Residence and definitely felt recharged after our stay there. With everyone rebooted, we felt ready for the next stretch of our journey… Southern Thailand!
